How can reading a book to a child be so effective in helping them become better readers? According to Jim Trelease (author of the Read-Aloud Handbook), we read to kids to entertain them, teach them, and to inspire them. Research says that in reading aloud to kids, we:
- condition the brain to associate reading with pleasure;
- create background knowledge
- build vocabulary
- provide a reading role model
It’s good for kids. It’s fun and good for adults, too! If we want kids to be lifelong readers, we must spark a fire in them and show them that books can open up a whole new world for them!
